Building a Europe Faithful to it's Christian roots

VATICAN CITY, 22 MAY 2009 (VIS) - This morning in the Vatican, Benedict XVI received in separate audiences first Georgi Parvanov, president of the Republic of Bulgaria, then Gjeorge Ivanov, president of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Both men, each accompanied by his wife and leading a delegation, have come to Rome for the commemoration of Sts. Cyril and Methodius.

In his address to the Bulgarian delegation, the Pope highlighted how the spiritual heritage of these two saints, co-patrons of Europe, "has marked the lives of the Slavic peoples; their example has supported the witness and faithfulness of countless Christians who, over the centuries, consecrated their lives to spreading the message of salvation, while at the same time working for the construction of a more just and united society".

"May their spiritual witness abide in you nation", he added, "so that Bulgaria, thanks also to this source of light and hope, may make an effective contribution to building a Europe faithful to its Christian roots. And may the values of solidarity and justice, of freedom and peace ... find even greater force and solidity in Christ's eternal teaching, as translated into the lives of His disciples in all times".

Then, speaking English in his audience with the delegation from the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Holy Father indicated that the memory of Sts. Cyril and Methodius "invites all of us who are united by the one faith in Jesus Christ, to contemplate their heroic evangelical witness. At the same time we are challenged to conserve the patrimony of ideals and values that they have transmitted by word and deed".

"Your beloved homeland, marked by the influence of these two great saints, seeks to become more and more a place of peaceful encounter and dialogue between the country's many social and religious spheres. My hope, which I renew today with all my heart, is that you may continue to progress on this path".

Geteilt/geeint.

Vatican: denouncing the errors behind the economic crisis

DENOUNCING THE ERRORS BEHIND THE ECONOMIC CRISIS

VATICAN CITY, 27 FEB 2009 (VIS) - During a meeting with pastors and clergy of the diocese of Rome which took place yesterday in the Hall of Blessings in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace, Benedict XVI answered eight questions put to him concerning such matters as the world economic crisis, the formation of priests, evangelisation, the educational emergency and the value of the liturgy.

Benedict XVI explained that the Church has the duty to present a reasonable and well-argued criticism of the errors that have led to the current economic crisis. This duty, he said, forms part of the Church's mission and must be exercised firmly and courageously, avoiding moralism but explaining matters using concrete reasons that may be understood by everyone.

Referring to his forthcoming social Encyclical, the Pope then presented a synthetic overview of the crisis, analysing it at two levels. First he considered the macroeconomic aspects, highlighting the shortcomings of a system founded on selfishness and the idolatry of money, which cast a shadow over man's reason and will and lead him into the ways of error. Here the Church is called to make her voice heard - nationally and internationally - in order to help bring about a change of direction and show the path of true reason illuminated by faith, which is the path of self-sacrifice and concern for the needy.

The second aspect of the Holy Father's analysis concerned the sphere of microeconomics. Large-scale projects for reform, he said, cannot come about unless individuals alter their ways. If there are no just people, then there can be no justice. Hence he invited people to intensify their humble, everyday efforts for the conversion of hearts, an undertaking that above all involves parishes whose activity is not just limited to the local community but opens up to all humanity.

Turning his attention to the question of evangelising work among people who have moved away from the faith, the Pope underlined the importance of personal witness from individuals who live not for themselves but for others. Such witness must be associated with the Word, he remarked, because it is the Word that gives credibility to witness by revealing that the faith is not a philosophy or a utopia, but a truth that becomes life.

To this end, Pope Benedict continued, what we need are priests and catechists who have cultural training, but above all who are capable of speaking to modern man with the simplicity of truth, in order to show people that God is not, in fact, some distant being but a person Who talks and acts in the lives of all human beings.

On the subject of the liturgy, the Pope commented that it is like a school in which to learn the art of being human and to experience familiarity with Christ. The Eucharist in particular must be lived as a sign and seed of charity, he said.

Answering a question concerning the significance of the Bishop of Rome's mission, the Holy Father explained that it is a guarantee of the universality of the Church. The Church does not identify with any particular culture because it transcends nationalism and frontiers to welcome all peoples, respecting their own particular richness and characteristics.

Finally, responding to a question on the educational emergency, Benedict XVI indicated that what is lacking today is a shared view of the world, an ethical orientation that keeps man from falling prey to arbitrariness. Thus, while faith remains open to all cultures, it is also their criterion for discernment and guidance.

Interview with father Peter Madros

The Palestinian father Peter Madros (born 1949) is a well known priest from Jerusalem. Father Madros, who holds two dr. degrees, is Vice-President of the Catholic Catechetical Counsel for the Middle-East and publishes weekly in the Arabic newspaper "Al Quds". Wim de Kok en Ton Lutter interviewed father Madros about the situation of the Christians in the Holy Land and the broader Middle-East. But also about interreligious dialogue, missionary works and the support foreign Catholics can give to fellow Catholics in the Holy Land.

How is the Arab-Christian community in the State of Israel faring?

First of all, I want to make it clear that I do not represent the Latin Patriarchate. The Arab Christians are official citizens, but of the fourth category, next to the Jews, Muslims and Druze who serve in the Israeli army. They have labour rights and social privileges and opportunities unlike the Christians in the Palestinian areas. Israeli law has prohibited Christian proselytism since 1979; not Jewish or Islamic proselytism. The treaty that was concluded between the Holy See and the State of Israel in 1993 has not yet paid off. Monsignor Sambi, who was ambassador of the Holy See in Jaffa-Tel-Aviv until 2005, proclaimed that the current situation is worse than it was in the time before the treaty. My expectations for the near future are that Israel shall more and more respect and understand non-Jewish citizens and that Christians – who refuse violence – shall fulfil a bridging function.

How is the Arab-Christian community in the Palestinian areas faring?

In the Palestinian areas we are living under the Palestinian Authority. We are glad we are no longer occupied by the Israeli’s. As Palestinians we desire a Palestinian state, as Christian Palestinians we do not desire an Islamic state – in which we would live as second-class citizens – but a secular state. Yet, with an Islamic majority such a dream is hard to realize – perhaps even impossible. For Islam – like the Jewish faith – essentially is ‘theocratic’. It desires the Muslims to rule, and this is something that Europe fails to understand! We, Christian Palestinians, do not have the right to preach our beliefs to the Muslims, but they do allow themselves to call us to the Islamic faith. The law does not prohibit this.

Paradoxically, Israeli occupation has caused two conflicting stands within the Palestinian Muslim community. First of all national unity with the Palestinian Christians for the national cause, history and territory. Second of all the Palestinian Muslims are gravely frustrated because Islam does not rule, therefore the Koran cannot be fulfilled and the Muslims cannot rule over the Christians, who form the weaker part of the population. In Iraq it is the same: Islamic people are spreading the theory that their Christian fellow citizens are accessory to Zionism and colonialism. Anarchy in the Palestinian areas results in a lot of aggression, ‘of course’ directed at the weak citizens, and especially the Christians.

Can you compare the position of your community to that of Christians elsewhere in the Middle East?

Only slightly, and it certainly cannot be compared to the position of the Christian people in Iraq. They have to live under a military occupation and many Muslims persecute them. We know no bloody persecution, there are no bombs going off in our churches. Christians in Islamic countries are under pressure. This is no secret. They are deprived of mass media of their own, such as radio and television. They may not spread their Christian belief nor are they given the opportunity to defend it. This causes a lot of pressure. Most Arab Christians have emigrated from their native country. In Syria, one of the ‘best’ countries to live in as a Christian, the position of local Christians is ‘good’. Today they make up 7% of the population, against 20% in 1980.

What interpretation can you give the interreligious dialogue?

We are Christians of the Holy Land and Middle East and have an age-long history with Jews and Muslims. Did I say “with”? No, I meant “under” the Jews since 1948 and 1967 and Muslims since 637, and the Crusades as intervals in between. Our daily dialogue is about – and answers to – Jewish Islamic objections against the Holy Trinity and divinity of Christ. With the Jews we cite the Old Testament, about the prophecies of the coming Messiah. The Muslims worship the Virgin Mary, which helps a lot! Yet do not harbour any illusions. The fundamental theocratic orientation of these two religions makes co-existence simply impossible. We – poor Christians – must accept a humble under-existence. The Koran literally states this in Chapter 9, verse 29.

What kind of missionary works is organized by your community?

No Israeli or Palestinian law allows us to preach the gospel to non-Christians such as Jews and Muslims. We give testimony of love in our charitable work and of reconciliation in our schools. A reverend priest from my country believes that we all must and can give a ‘silent’ confession. But then why do we have a tongue? When people ask us about our religion we must – and can – answer. This is also stated by the Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 3, 15! The apostles themselves have said it: “For us it is impossible not to speak about what we have seen and heard”, in Acts chapter 4, 20.

How can Catholics abroad support the RC community in the Holy Land so that it can flourish again?

The Roman Catholics can pray for us. We need it. They can keep in contact with us, via e-mail and websites. The Good Friday offertory is not enough. Catholics can give priority to the saints of Jerusalem, such as Paul did in 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9. Also pilgrimages can be organized to the Holy Land, combined with a meeting with the local Christian community, for example on Sundays during mass. The pilgrims can be accommodated in Christian hotels and dine in Christian restaurants, for the entire country exists on tourism and especially Christian tourists. Together with other Christians from the Holy Land I am willing to meet foreign pilgrims in their hotels and for example talk about our situation after dinner. Not the political situation. Volunteers are more than welcome to come and assist us and live with us, for a week, a year or even longer. They can help us in our churches, schools and institutions. A monthly donation of only one euro to one of the poor Christians in the Holy Land can make a large difference. The money has to arrive through certified channels, such as for instance the Latin Patriarchate. Sponsorship for children in catholic schools is also very important: school expenses amount to 300 euro a year. These contributions are directly sent to the school administration and not to the parents. Church ties between parishes abroad and the Holy Land are more than welcome. Foreign parishes can invite Christians from the Holy Land to talk about the situation of the church. If necessary I can provide you with a giro account number for the benefit of financial contributions.
